Incessant checking of emails and social media outside of standard office hours rarely adds to actual productivity—instead, it simply breeds pointless, lingering stress. If you find yourself available 24/7 to increasingly demanding requests, you are bound to get overloaded. To effectively manage work-life balance, you must harness the power of saying “no.”

If you tend to say “yes” automatically without thinking when asked to do something extra, learn to stall. Don’t answer straight away. Say you will get back to the person, then use that breathing room to think clearly about your current capacity.
